FTL is an award-winning programme designed to help the FCDO apply frontier technologies to the biggest challenges in development. The DT Global team works with FCDO pioneers and implementing partners to pilot uses of technology to develop learning that can inform both FCDO programming and the wider development sector.

As an Innovation Manager, the role has included introducing new partners to FCDO requirements (e.g., effective forecasting and financial approaches, supply chain mapping, asset management), providing practical support to aid compliance and coaching the technical implementation of pilots with an agile methodology.

More widely, Nick has supported the design of the latest call for proposals, reflecting on the most successful approaches to contracting and onboarding grantees in line with PROG requirements. This has been fed into both the updated design of the core Livestreaming Pilots approach as well as the design of a brand-new stream, the Discovery Fund, where approaches have been tailored to the stream's key needs.

Building upon the foundation of COVIDaction, the Oxygen and Vaccine Data Co-labs pick up two key themes from the original programme to build better preparedness for future pandemics and to support resilient health systems. These two themes have been developed into stand-alone programmes, using an innovative CoLab methodology to tackle systemic problems from multiple angles.

As Programme Manager, Nick has been building on approaches under COVIDaction, designing budgets and developing the mechanisms for programme forecasting and invoicing as well as embedding them within the team. Alongside the financial systems, Nick has also been designing the approaches to calls for grantees and their management, based upon the leading systems built over decades by DT Global.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FTL programme pivoted and set up COVIDaction, investing in and sourcing innovations, strengthening supply chains and building a technology pipeline to support activities related to the COVID-19 pandemic across four key thematic areas.

Joining the programme at a key stage in 2021, with grants ongoing under two themes (Local Product Local Solutions and Oxygen themes) and beginning under the Vaccine Data theme, Nick delivered joined-up forecasting and financial management and risk monitoring across the programme.

Against tight timelines, with some grantees having only three months to implement pilots, and with the programme pivoting to providing additional rapid response funds, Nick was able to support delivery and close down with minimal variance and with grantees meeting their timelines and deliverables.

As a key member of the EACDS Lot C Framework Management Team for over three years, Nick oversaw the delivery of over 290 call downs, with a total value of over £35m. Working with the team and over 70 partners to provide the best development expertise as quickly and efficiently as possible to HMG with average response times of just 9 working days.

He and the team were able to deliver rapid response times while still ensuring high quality teams and deliverables, with high satisfaction levels and strong DFID SMART/FCDO PrOF compliance. His role on the framework included overseeing all ongoing projects, managing priority key assignments while ensuring all projects were completed successfully from initial start-up through to completion.

Nick also led on framework level financial management and forecasting, engaging with government counterparts at early stages to rapidly develop and resource new call downs tailored to their specific requirements across 30 countries, and supporting framework level learning to draw out lessons and key themes to feed into the FCDO's future planning.

Nick managed a £250,000 challenge fund to support Collective Action Initiatives (CAIs) and Civil Society, aiming to tackle corruption and modern slavery issues in developing countries. The fund was at the forefront of FCDO Governance funding, being the first to pilot working with CAIs and one of the first looking to tackle corruption by working with a private rather than public sector focus.

The position of Fund Manager included designing and implementing the programme and fund, including the call for proposals, with the aim of being as accessible as possible and reaching new organisations who had not previously worked with the FCDO. Nick then coached grantees across the life of their pilots, guiding them on implementation and scaling.

As Fund Manager, he also led the design and the implementation of a monitoring and learning system across the three grantees and five countries, facilitating learning sessions between the grantees and key HMG staff. The learning generated has fed back into HMG designs for future larger-scale funds.

Nick worked as part of the project management unit coordinating short-term missions to monitor EU funded projects across Asia and the Pacific. The ROM Programme is a key pillar of the European Commission's monitoring and learning system globally.

Promoted from Junior Project Executive to Project Executive, supporting the management of one of Landell Mills' most complex projects from the Brussels office. The role included supporting the day-to-day project management of over 200 missions a year, leading on programme reporting and analysing quantitative data to provide high-level trend reports, and collating and synthesising recommendations to the EC on how projects could be adapted and improved.
