Things I'm proud of from my work in international development
Conceptualised, structured, procured, and managed the implementation of six “Oxygen as a Service” pilots delivering evidence in action testing innovative healthcare models and demonstrating a new approach to oxygen delivery as an option to bridge the global oxygen gap.
Led a South-South private sector innovation partnership taking a technology pioneered in Colombia and India (electric third wheels for wheelchairs) to explore its usage potential in Nairobi, Kenya. Piloted the technology with people with disabilities in Kibera Slum and brokered an innovative “ownership through employment” financing approach with large companies in Nairobi.
Delivered an innovative R&D Challenge in partnership with UNICEF, structuring a $6M Advance Purchase Commitment, and providing targeted R&D Funding with a 22:1 coinvestment ratio to motivate health tech manufacturers to build the first ever oxygen concentrator that was designed for low resource settings.
Led a world first lab testing programme to test the most popular oxygen concentrators used in low resource settings to bring transparency to hospitals in LMICs and empower them to make informed decisions for the first time.
Beyond Relief used non-traditional approaches to identify informal businesses in Zimbabwe, working with mobile money partners and AI to identify potential businesses, reach out to them in a grant funding round and delivering $1k cash transfers by mobile money. Average long term income increased 47% after the grant. 60% of the grants were awarded to female entrepreneurs. Achieved impact similar to traditional grant programmes with a 90:10 Grant : TA split.
